5 Benefits of Group Training by PT Charlie James

5 Benefits of Group Training
When people first join a gym, they’re often unsure what they should do once they step inside the building. Some struggle to determine which exercises to do, others simply don’t know how to do them. Whether you’re a beginner at the gym or you just don’t have much fitness knowledge, group fitness classes may be your solution. Joining a class can help build a foundation and structure that you can use to fuel your personal health journey for years to come.
  • 1. Motivation  – It’s inspiring and motivating to be surrounded by dedicated, like-minded individuals. It doesn’t get much more empowering than a class with an encouraging instructor and supportive people all working hard together. Group fitness is a great way to help motivate yourself and others to dig deeper and push harder in workouts.
  • 2. Structure  – Group fitness is a great way to get a workout in without having to think or plan what you need to do. Each class is structured with a warm-up, a balanced workout and a cool-down. Meaning all you have to do is turn up, follow what the instructor says and give it your all. Which is especially great at 6am when your brain hasn’t switched on yet.
  • 3. Variety  – Bodyblitz, Strongwoman, Kettlercise, Spin, Active Yoga, Express Core–the list goes on. There is a massive variety of group classes offered in many gyms and especially at the Fitness Hub. Having a variety of classes in your weekly workout regimen is a great way to create muscle confusion, which keeps your body guessing and ramps up your metabolism. It also helps prevent boredom.
  • 4. Proper Form It’s the fitness instructor’s job to not only show proper form, but to also make sure that everyone in the class is executing each exercise the right way. Not only is proper form important for your muscles to reap the most out of every exercise, but it also helps eliminate potential injuries.
  • 5. Fun There’s really no other way to put it: Group fitness classes are fun. Between the upbeat music, a great workout and a group of people motivating each other along the way, it’s an enjoyable way to exercise.
If you’re looking to add a little more pizazz and fun in your fitness life, group classes may be just what you need.

My Personal Training experience at the Hub – Gemma Watts

I have a few mechanical-type medical conditions and was told by several medical professionals not to do too much in the way of exercise, but I wanted to do more to help strengthen my body to help with these problems.

I joined the Hub in 2015 and started off with some yoga to ease me back into moving my body again. I know I can’t do any high impact exercise and was struggling to work out what I could and couldn’t do but I wanted to do more. So I started PT sessions with Charlie and it’s been amazing!

I now do weight training, which I absolutely love, and I can do so much more than I thought. Charlie has really understood my restrictions but brought out my strengths and given me loads of ways to support my weaker areas and this has made such a difference to my every day life. I know this sounds a little cheesy but when you’re on 10+ pills a day for pain, this sort of thing really does make all the difference!

I train at least 5 days a week now and every time I go there, the team are always so welcoming and helpful and there is a really good atmosphere in the gym, they have a great selection of machines and weights as well as a wide range of classes, it’s practically my second home now!

My Ladies Body Transformation experience – Jane Jones

We asked Jane Jones about her experience of the Body Transformation course in January…….

1 – What was your motivation to sign up to the Ladies Body Transformation course?

I have been a member of The Hub for 18 months.  At the beginning of the year I had the chance to join in with my first Body Transformation course.  I know that The Hub had done one before and I wanted to get involved.  I had a good routine at the gym and had been going regularly.  However, I wanted support and advice with nutrition.  I knew that I needed help to work out what would be a good meal plan to work along side the exercise I had been doing.

2 – What were your aims from the course – did they change at all ?

I wanted to keep to the plan.  I wanted to lose weight and I wanted to lose inches.  All of which I achieved over the six week course.  However, it also gave me the opportunity to meet others that went to the gym and with similar goals to my own.  This proved to be a great motivator and made going to classes more fun!

3 – What were your first impressions of the course?

We all get together as a group each week.  The first week getting was an overview of the how the transformation will work.  There are no scales involved but we get measured at the beginning and end of the course.  We were also asked to measure our improvement in how we felt whilst following a healthy diet and exercising.  An important point to consider especially if you want to make a life long change.  The nutrition plan is straight forward and easy to follow.  Handouts were given for each aspect of the nutrition and sheets for recording your food and weekly commitment to exercising.  Nicely set up for the challenge ahead.

4 – Did you have any low moments, if so how did you overcome them?

No low points, except when it ended!

5 – How has it impacted on your life following the course?

I generally feel happier and have more energy in my everyday life.  I have continued to follow the nutritional advice and continued to exercise at the The Hub but the nicest bit is getting to know others as it makes a visit to the gym  a lot nicer, even when it hurts!

6 – What is your overall experience?

I committed to the process and really enjoyed it.  I was pleased with my results 14lbs lost and 21.5cm reduction on my measurements.  Hence, I am coming back for the Summer Transformation for more of the same!

Shaun Scammell – My journey to UKBFF Southcoast 2016

Shaun Scammell  – My journey to UKBFF Southcoast 2016

My journey started at the beginning of the year and continued for 16 weeks to compete on 24th April in Portsmouth at the UKBFF South Coast British Qualifier. I competed there with a few friends Myles farrier, Luke lock, Andy Osbourne and Kalam Grace who all also train at the hub. Unfortunately I didn’t place in the top 3 but it was a tough line up and I was happy with how far I came. I first competed last year and placed 1st in my category taking the winning trophy and I have certainly progressed a lot since then and hope to do so as I go on.

Iv been training for over 10 years now but I would say only the last 4-5years have I taken it more seriously! My dad Ian Scammell is one of the main reasons I got into weight training as he has been training for over 20 years and competed in numerous body-building shows leading on to great success and coming away winning shows and being in the top 3 year on year. Finally last year October 2015 he won UKDFBA Masters over 40’s class so now he is British Champion. He will be competing again later this year to retain his title and win an invite to compete in the world championships in Los Angeles. He alone is enough motivation to keep me inspired!

My 16 week prep for my show consisted of a very tough training schedule with an hour cardio before work at 5am followed by weight training in the evenings after work with a little more cardio after that.  Along with a calorie restricted diet things were really tough but with the help of the people around me to keep pushing me through the tough times was invaluable. I can’t thank my partner Olivia Dean for all her support through the process. Thank you also to my training partner Kalam Grace (who also competed) pushing me through my workouts, my family and friends for there support and particularly my dad Ian Scammell for all the advice and wise words!

I would like to thank The Fitness hub for their support, the staff are all lovely and very welcoming. The owners Claire and Andy are great people always supporting me, I would recommend the gym to anyone as it suits anybody with any fitness goals no matter the age, sex or body structure there is something for everyone and the atmosphere is great!

With the right work ethic and mind set you can achieve anything in life and with the right people and equipment around I have managed to achieve what I wanted. It wasn’t an easy road but I loved every second of being on that stage and I will continue to compete for years to come!

My Ladies Body Transformation Experience by Sarah Gillingham

We asked Sarah Gillingham about her experience of the last Ladies Body Transformation Course in January……..

1 – What was your motivation to sign up for the Ladies Body Transformation course ?

Having been a member of the Hub since it opened I felt that I’d become stuck in a rut with my training. I’d stop doing a lot of the classes as I felt I couldn’t keep up with the younger fitter members and was always the slow one that everyone was waiting for.  Due to this the weight was creeping on! I was the heaviest I had ever been and didn’t feel comfortable with this. Having heard good things about previous Transformation classes I knew it was something I had to challenge myself to do.

2 – What were your aims from the course, did they change at all ?

My aims were to get my confidence back in going to classes, get fitter and address my relationship with food.  As a woman you always believe that if you eat more you will put on weight – my husband has always told me that I don’t eat enough to fuel my body – something that I had always struggled to get my head around!

3 – What were your first impressions of the course ?

I felt very apprehensive walking into the first session, however, I needn’t have worried,  Claire was lovely and everyone was made to feel welcome. Everything was well planned and explained. It was a very mixed group of ladies but all with the same end goal – to feel better about ourselves.

4 – Did you have any low moments, how did you overcome them ?

To be honest I found the entire 6 weeks to be thoroughly enjoyable, with no real low points. I made a commitment to myself at the start and I was determined to see it through. I think that having the support of everyone at the Hub and the Facebook group encouraged us all to support and encourage each other.

5 – What did you achieve from the course and how has it impacted your life ?

For me the Transformation was the start of a new me! It gave me my confidence back. It made me realise that going to classes is about me – it doesn’t matter what everyone else can do – it’s about me challenging myself to improve my fitness and having the confidence to try different things. Since completing the course I have continued to do various different classes – Weighted pump, Supersculpt, Total Barre, Spinning, Strongwoman, Old Skool Conditioning ……..not bad for an old bird!!!!
In addition to getting my confidence back it has helped me to understand the need to fuel my body through a healthy sustainable diet – which has resulted in overall inch loss & weight loss

7 – What was your overall experience ?

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. The course was well planned and carried out. The talks each week were inspiring, finally being able to understand the importance of proteins, fats & carbs was a turning point for me. It gave me the opportunity to try different aspects of gym life as each week we tried different things – yoga, Crossfit, weight machines, interval training, pad work and so much more. Knowing that we had to hand in our weekly food diary also made me determined to stick to it!!!

Thank you to everyone involved.

Sarah Matyjasik – My journey to NABBA West 30th April

Sarah Matyjasik shares her story of her journey to NABBA West 30th April…………

Hi.. Im Sarah… I’m 42 and have 2 gorgeous children 13 & 10, I’m currently 5 days out competing in the ‘trained bikini’ at the PCA and ‘toned figure’ categories at NABBA West, next Weekend!….

My journey started last year in January, when I felt like an overindulged a little in December and things needed a change. I started on a cleanse and fit program that’s part of my business, as the company were running a ‘New Year new you’ competition. I thought this was the perfect opportunity for me to go for….. I had great results over the 69 days and realised I needed to set some goals!!

I had weight trained in my late teens and I had always loved it but I found with children coming along, busy jobs and family life… I didn’t quite seem to make enough time to continue training. I had been out the gym for around 12 years until last January.

The goal….it had to be something quite scary, something to make me work hard to achieve and I thought what better than a goal from my ‘bucket list’…..I’d always wanted to compete when I was younger but had never quite achieved it!…

I didn’t really know where to start but I did a bit of research and came across my awesome coach Leica Gelsei, I went over to meet her in Wales in Pontypridd and from there we struck up a great relationship and she’s been such a massive help and support, in coaching me on my diet and my training program. We decided on the show I was going to do, this was the WBF Showdown on the 28th September 2015 and set to work around May when I met her..

I trained around 5 days a week and stuck to a ‘keto’ style nutrition programme.. I love training with intensity doing super sets, giant sets, drop sets, tri sets etc. I love to feel the cardio challenge when training, I think this has really helped my progress!..

Fast forward 4 months….I was soooo excited to be standing on stage after all the work I’d put in, it was loads of fun with lots of glamour on the day…. As a result I was invited from both my categories to compete in the PCA British finals at the Symphony Hall Birmingham in June this year – whoo hoo!

I’ve spent the last 6 months training hard & growing and have stuck to my eating plan fairly rigidly with the exception of 3 days over Xmas, I allowed myself to relax my food a little…
When I started I had no idea whether I could do this but I was determined to work hard to make changes to feel ‘fit n healthy’ and to be congruent…

Doing the show last year and training for this year’s, has taught me many many things about not only myself but how important goal setting and goal achieving is, improving your mind set to believe in success and how anyone can achieve this…you just have to be prepared to have courage and put in some work!

Scott Price – NABBA West Area show 2016

Scott Price on his lead up to his first bodybuilding competition on the 1st May

I am currently on my first bodybuilding prep getting myself ready for the National Amateur Body-Builders Association West Area show on the 1st May.  I have always been a motivated and positive person in everything I do, always trying to push myself to the next level.

In the past I have taken part in many challenges including the Three Peaks 24 hour challenge, several Bristol 10k races and numerous Spartan Races, however, I have always loved going to the gym and hitting the weights since I was a teenager so this year I set myself a whole new level of training. I have been dieting since the start of January, training twice a day, Cardio before breakfast and weight training after work. Meals consist of 8 a day but keeping the calories low. Is been a tough 4 months so far but with just a few weeks to go everything seems to be coming together.

The Hub gym and all staff, my trainer Jeff Nutt, friends family and most importantly my girlfriend Amber have given me the most amazing backing which honestly helps so much, not only keeping me on track but also the focus it has given me.

Past experience has taught me that there are always negative people in the world, which will look for opportunities to bring you and your achievements down, these days; however, it just motivates me more to push myself to my ultimate limits.

I am absolutely buzzing for my first bodybuilding competition! Roll on the 1st of May, In it to win it !!

Kalam Grace – UKBFF South Coast Bodybuilding Show Portsmouth

This week we would like to introduce Hub member Kalam Grace who is soon to be competing in the UKBFF South Coast Bodybuilding Show in Portsmouth.

I joined the Fitness Hub in August 2013 wanting to make a change to my life. Having not done any form of exercise or weight training since I had left school it was tough to start with but I very rapidly caught the bug and haven’t looked back since.

After training for a year and a half I realised I wasn’t making much of a change so I decided after taking some advice to switch up my nutrition which has had major benefits to my training.  In the latter part of 2015 is when I finally felt comfortable enough with my physique to consider giving competing a go. With influence and invaluable advice from 2015 UKDFBA Masters over 40’s British Champion Ian Scammell and encouragement from my training partner 2015 IBFA Atheltic Tall class winner Shaun Scammel, I decided to compete in the UKBFF South Coast show on 24th April.

The Fitness Hub provides a impressive range of equipment to meet all of your goals, it has a great atmosphere and  staff are always willing to give you a hand if you need it. All in all the support from the Fitness Hub, my family and friends have helped me to get where I am today on this very tough journey to the stage.
